Story

Viewpoint: Sumire

As the school day begins, Ai tosses a hand made charm towards Sumire. Ai says it's for her, having made matching charms for herself and Rise as well. Rise and Ai had been friends with Sumire for years,as Rise's parents knew Sumire's and would bring her for playdates often. The two met Ai in grade school, and had been close since. Ever since coming to this school, though, Rise's family connections made her incredibly popular, and by extension Ai and Sumire.

Sumire points out they already have friendship keychains, but Ai says the charm is for her bag. Sumire puts the charm on her backpack and asks if they're planning anything after class. Ai says she isn't, and Rise suggest they do what they usually do-hanging around the arcade, the bakery, and skipping class. Ai says they wouldn't do that, and turns to Sumire for affirmation.

Yeah! That's not a good thing to do...

Rise shows annoyance at Sumire and Ai's dedication, but Ai points out skipping would make classes more difficult. Rise groans in frustration.

I do it sometimes.

Ai sheepishly states that isn't that bad while Rise says that Sumire is almost always in class. Sumire counters that if they skip every class they'd be expelled, but Rise points out she isn't expelled.

Welllll...class isn't mandatory?

Ai gasps in shock as Rise notes she could learn a thing or two from her. Rise then points out Sumire is never in homeroom. Sumire says she has a lot to do outside school, so she doesn't go, saying it's family related.

Rise suggests they get the week over with so they can hang out on the weekend. Ai and Sumire agree. Sumire muses on their friendship, admitting it's gotten hard to keep up with them, but still enjoys hanging out with them.

Ai asks if Rise had heard about the kid who fell down the stairs the other day. Rise says she saw the video online, calling it glorious. Ai asks if Sumire had seen it, but Sumire says she hasn't. Ai claims it was everywhere on social media, but Sumire says she doesn't use those. She muses on how she feels as if she only ever hears bad news or rumors online, and has kept away from social media to avoid it. Regardless, Sumire feels as if she's begun to drift away from her friends.

Rise snaps Sumire out of her trance, telling her she's spacing out again. Ai points out they should get to class as Rise goes to the cafeteria to loiter. Sumire parts with them and heads to class with Ai. During the lecture, Sumire muses on her two friends further-Rise never seems to be in class, yet always has a story to tell about her classmates. Ai claims to be a good student by attending class, but never seems to stay focused, being on her phone hiding under her desk.

The class ends, and Sumire returns to her locker with Ai. Ai asks if Sumire still wanted to go to the grocer's later, which Sumire confirms. Ai asks Sumire if she's considering another baking night this weekend.

Yep!

Ai wonders what they'll bake today, suggesting they make cupcakes.

Cupcakes? Sure!

Ai notes her favorite flavor is red velvet, which Sumire says she knows. She also promises to get chocolate for Rise as well. Ai asks what flavor Sumire will get, but Sumire claims she'll be fine with both. Ai asks if she's sure, but Sumire insists she's fine. However, she notes to herself she actually likes strawberry best, but usually caters to her friends when she's baking, though realizes it may just be in general.

Maybe just *a* cake.

Ai is hesitant, not wanting to eat too much of it. Sumire says she'll keep the leftovers for her family, but Ai points out a slice of cake is more cake then a cupcake. Ai suggests they ask Rise about it first, saying she might want cupcakes too. Sumire notes that the two are very opinionated, having made up their minds on something before even trying it.

Nice, loafy bread!

Ai points out that bread makes people fat, and says they should be making something more granular. Sumire says that bread is still good, but Ai says she'd prefer cupcakes. Ai begins staring Sumire down with puppy eyes, something Sumire notes she does often to get what she wants. She then muses both her and Rise are like this, forcing Sumire to compromise often. Sumire reluctantly agrees to Ai's request.

Oh, it's for later.

Ai asks what Sumire is planning. Sumire says she plans to make desserts for their lunches. Ai says it's a good idea, and asks Sumire what she plans to make.

Cookies.

Ai points out how sugary they are, but Sumire points out they're sweet. Ai asks what kind of cookies Sumire is making, but Sumire hasn't decided yet. Ai interrupts and suggests chocolate with milk chocolate, but realizes that'd be too much chocolate. She settles on milk chocolate chip cookies. Sumire notes that Ai has heart, but tends to be self-centered, suggesting what she wants first and refusing to accept alternatives.

Sumire reluctantly agrees, musing on Ai's lack of sincerity despite her outwardly friendly personality.

Cupcakes.

Ai says those are a good idea, and asks Sumire to make her red velvet since they're her favorite. Sumire agrees, saying she'll also get chocolate for Rise.

Taro Bread.

Ai asks what taro bread is. Sumire is unable to describe it, but says it's super creamy and tasty. Ai looks it up on her phone and asks Sumire if it's actually safe to eat. Sumire says it is, asking why it wouldn't be. Ai says it's purple, and that makes it look wrong. Sumire notes Ai hasn't even tried it yet, being far more stubborn then she seems on the surface.

Nope, my grandma needs the fridge full again.

Ai is disappointed in Sumire's answer, asking if she's sure she won't at least consider grabbing something for later.

I shouldn't be spending too much...

Ai says that Sumire's family isn't poor, but Sumire says she doesn't want to waste her grandmother's money. Ai gives her a disappointed look.

Hmm...okay.

Ai is excited as Sumire mentally apologizes to her grandmother, admitting it's hard to say no to Ai. Sumire muses that she's never been able to say "no" to Ai.

Maybe I should ask my Grandma first...

Ai thinks her grandmother wouldn't mind, though Sumire notes Ai barely knows her grandmother. Sumire says she'd still ask her anyways, but Ai claims she'd refuse. Sumire points out that's why she won't, and Ai goes quiet.

As Ai closes her locker, Rise rushes towards the two fuming. Ai asks her what's wrong, and Rise claims there was a "boy" wearing the girls' uniform in her class. She begins to stomp around as she and Ai try to figure out how the student obtained the uniform. Rise assumes they'd stolen it, and their conversation steers to gossiping about the new kid.

Ai says this is horrible, and Rise says they need to do something about it. Ai asks if she's worried, as the new kid sits next to her, but Rise says they're too dorky to be that kind of threat. Rise says they should still warn others though, and Ai agrees, saying she'll warn her other friends. Rise tells Sumire to warn her other friends as well. Sumire notes, in horror, how the two know nothing about this person.

Wait, what?

Rise is shocked, asking what else they would do with creeps who sit next to them. She warns Sumire that the "trespasser" could go after her as well.

Did they do anything to you?

Rise admits they didn't, but argues they're still a creep and a "trespasser".

Sumire avoids saying anything further, wondering what had gotten into them. Rise coins the name "trespasser" for the new student, which Ai praises her for coming up with. Rise decides to tell the other girls of the "trespasser", but Sumire attempts to speak up:

Do you really want to do this?

Rise argues she isn't doing anything bad to them, saying if people call him a trespasser and bully them, then it isn't her problem. Ai agrees with her.

What's this person's name?

Rise is unable to remember, saying it was "Ha...something". Ai asks if she doesn't know, but Rise counters they're just a trespasser to her.

...

Sumire is unable to say anything as Rise continues humming to herself.

Feeling ill, Sumire heads to the bathroom, saying she'll catch up with the two after class. As Sumire hurries away, she runs into an unfamiliar student. She wonders if they're the new kid her friends have been gossiping about as they run off.

In the bathroom, Sumire realizes she's afraid of what her friends are becoming. The two have been gossiping about people for a long time, and Sumire feels disgusted to be a part of it. Sumire wishes she could be honest about how she feels, that they've become monsters, but feels they won't understand.

Sumire realizes the kid she ran into had to be the transfer student, noting how they didn't look dangerous or threatening. She recognized their expression as belonging to someone who feels like they don't belong.

As she leaves the bathroom, Sumire realizes she accidentally skipped homeroom. Sumire heads to her locker to grab her belongings for next class, and sees that the gossip about the "trespasser" has spread fast. She overhears two students gossiping about them, claiming someone is going to bring a box of erasers to throw at them. One student points out it's mean, but the other argues it's just something that happens to "weirdos". Sumire tries to ignore how her classmates have begun to sound like Rise and Ai as she sees the two at her locker.

Rise asks Sumire if she's okay, saying she's been acting weird today:

I'm doing okay.

Ai asks if she's sure, saying she looks unwell. Sumire stays quiet, and Rise asks what that's supposed to mean.

That's my line!

Rise asks what that's supposed to mean, but quickly moves on.

Rise says she and Ai are worried, and offer to take Sumire home after class. Ai says she was going to suggest karaoke, but doesn't think Sumire should sing if she feels unwell. Rise agrees, but suddenly stops speaking as Sumire turns around and sees the new kid behind her.

The new kid tries looking away, but Rise closes up on them. Ai follows Rise's lead, closing the new kid in further as Rise begins asking how they'd gotten the girls' uniform. As they struggle to answer, Rise and Ai begin pressuring them into a corner. Sumire, for the first time, is unable to look her friends in the eye as the new kid begs to be left alone.

Ai says the new kid has committed a grave sin as Rise tells them people like them don't get second chances. Ai tells them not to wear the uniform tomorrow, as she can't let them hurt her classmates anymore.

Sumire is focused on the new kid, wondering what they feel as the scene feels far away from her. At the same time, Sumire feels as if she's finally woken up after sleeping for a long, long time.

Sumire smashes her locker shut and tells them to stop, calling the two disgusting.
