Route: My Heart's Reflection
Hakuno's father tells her they need to talk as he and her mother sit her at the dinner table. Shion asks what's going on, and Hakuno tries to explain she wanted to tell her, but her father tells Shion to go to her room. After she's gone, the room goes quiet:
...
Her father explains they were talking with an old colleage whose kid also goes to Hakuno's school, and who knows things they didn't until now.
What... did you want to talk about?
Her mother says they want to talk about her time at school, and what she hasn't told them.
Hakuno realizes someone told them about her wearing the girls' uniform at school, which her father confirms. He also says she's apparently been telling others that she identifies as a girl. He demands that Hakuno explain herself:
I want to be a girl. That's who I know I really am.
Her mother immediately pushes back, asking if she really thought about it. Hakuno says she has been her whole life, but her mother points out she said nothing about it. Her mother claims she didn't really think about it then, because she knew how much it would hurt them.
I'm trans. I am a girl.
Her mother asks if she's really sure about it. Hakuno says she it, but her mother counters she doesn't sound sure. Hakuno says it isn't easy to tell her, and her mother quickly claims it's because she knows it's wrong. She claims that she'll end up as her friend's kid; he wanted to be a boy, and her friend let him. Because of the cost of transition and the damage to their family's reputation, they wound up becoming poor. Hakuno's father tries to claim it didn't go exactly like that, but her mother interrupts him and says he isn't helping. She continues, saying seeing Hakuno now hurts her.
Her father asks who told her saying nothing was acceptable, and her mother asks why she didn't tell them. Hakuno says it's because she's afraid, and her mother begins to go off. She questions how Hakuno could be afraid when she claims she's the one who'd given up so much for her children, worried they'd throw it away at every turn. She claims that Hakuno is doing that here, and that she couldn't be more disappointed in her.
Her father calls it shameful, and guilts Hakuno over hurting her mother's feelings, telling her she is never getting out of this one.
As they continue to berate her, the words begin to blur for Hakuno as she cries, and in her desperation, she asks them what it would take to forgive her. Her mother tells her to stop presenting as a girl, stop going to school, tell everyone she was playing a prank, and let them take Hakuno to a mental institution.
I'm sorry, I can't do that.
No.
Hakuno says she still wants to go to school and doesn't want to be taken to a mental institution, or wherever her parents think will "fix" her. Her father is enraged by this, telling her she can't offer the idea of being forgiven and then reject what it would take. Her mother tells her if she won't do this, then there isn't anything she can do. Hakuno's despair turns to anger as she accuses them of never really loving her, just wanting to mold her into their perfect child. In anger, she says she wishes they weren't her parents.
The room goes quiet as Shion begins crying in her room. Enraged, her mother grabs her backpack and throws it at her, nearly hitting her in the face. She tells Hakuno she has ten minutes to leave. Her father gives her a disappointed glare, calling her a disgrace and saying she can die on the streets for the suffering she's caused.
The rain begins pouring like on Hakuno's first day of school as she stumbles onto Sumire's street, wondering if she could have done something better. She berates herself for not being able to stand up to them as she questions what Sumire will think. She knocks on the door, and waits for her to answer.
Route: True to Myself
Hakuno braces herself for the confrontation, nearly calling it off, but goes through with it anyways. She sits down with her parents at the dinner table and tells them:
I'm transgender
I'm not going to be closeted anymore. I'm a girl.
Her mother is upset, but Hakuno continues: she explains she's happiest as a girl, and was trying it out at school. Her father is furious she did this behind their backs, telling Hakuno to shut up when she tries to explain further. He tells Hakuno he's furious for "posing" as a girl behind their backs under their family name, when they could have stopped her.
That's exactly why I didn't tell you.
Her mother asks if she didn't trust them, which Hakuno confirms.
Are you saying you wouldn't have even given me a chance?
The room goes quiet before her mother says she can't say that. Hakuno says she can because she isn't making this fair, but her father counters that, as her parents, it isn't ever going to be fair, and asks Hakuno if she knows her place.
The air grows awkward and stiffing until her mother suddenly slams the table with fury. She claims she gave up everything for her children to have the best life, worried they'll throw it away at every turn, and claims Hakuno is doing that right now. She asks if she's so sure it was the right choice she never stopped to think about how it would hurt her.
You didn't put in anything for that. I've just lived in fear of facing your disapproval all this time!
Her father asks if that's what she thinks of them and her mother calls her horrible.
So why deny me this?
Her parents don't answer, unable to think of anything but their anger.
Her mother says she couldn't be more disappointed, and her father agrees. She says that looking at Hakuno now hurts her, and her father tells Hakuno he hopes that she's happy. He demands she stop being a girl if she wants to fix this, but Hakuno refuses as she says this is who she is. Her mother says she's nothing to her then.
As Hakuno struggles to keep her composure, Hakuno declares that if this is what they think of her, then she can't stay here. Her mother tells her to go, and her father tells her if she thinks she's old enough to make her own decisions, she can learn to live with the consequences. He tells her not to come back, saying this place is only for their family.
The rain begins pouring down as Hakuno heads for Sumire's house. Despite the heartache, she knows in her heart this was the right choice. She reaches Sumire's home, stops in front of the door, and rings the doorbell as she wonders what will lie ahead for her.
