Story

Viewpoint: Sumire

Sumire wakes up to her grandmother speaking with someone at the door. Her grandmother calls out to her that Hakuno just came inside, to Sumire's shock. She heads downstairs to see Hakuno, soaked from the rain and carrying two suitcases.

Hakuno asks if she could stay with Sumire for a bit. Sumire says yes, and sets Hakuno's suitcases aside before finding a towel to dry her off with.

Hakuno sits on the couch, wrapped in a blanket Sumire brought her and barely speaking.

Do you want me to get you some tea?

Hakuno agrees, and Sumire looks for something Hakuno would like. She prepares a cup and brings it over to Hakuno, who quietly takes a sip.

Would you like a snack?

Hakuno does, and Sumire grabs a bag of chips from the pantry for her. She tries to toss it to Hakuno, but it lands on the floor as Hakuno remains still before she picks it up.

Need anything?

Hakuno says she doesn't and continues to stay quiet. Sumire decides to get her some water, which Hakuno drinks after a bit.

Hakuno thanks Sumire, beginning to ease up. Sumire asks Hakuno if something happened, and Hakuno reveals that she was kicked out by her parents. Hakuno says she'll figure something out as she begins to shut down again. Sumire wants to help her open up, but is afraid of hurting Hakuno in the process. Her grandmother comes in and tells Hakuno they have a guest room open with a phone if she needs to call anyone. Sumire asks Hakuno if she can speak with anyone. Hakuno mentions her aunt, saying she seems safe to talk about these things with.

Sumire goes to bake a batch of cookies while Hakuno calls her aunt. She wishes she could do more for Hakuno, but knows she can't do anything in the moment. As she sets the batch in the oven, she wishes Hakuno would open up to her more, but knows she likely won't after what just happened. Despite that, she still hopes she can be someone Hakuno can rely on in times like these.

The guest room door opens as Hakuno comes out. Sumire tells her the cookies are ready, and takes a plate over to the couch with Hakuno. As the two begin eating through the batch, Sumire asks her what her aunt said. Hakuno says her aunt will come to take her in tomorrow, but due to living in the city, Hakuno will be changing schools again, and likely won't be coming back. Sumire freezes as she realizes that Hakuno is forced to leave her friends behind.

Viewpoint: Hakuno

The two are unable to touch the rest of the cookies. As they sit in silence, Hakuno laments how the few people who want her here are unable to keep her. With tonight being her last night with Sumire, Hakuno is unable to say goodbye to Rhyme and Han.

Route: My Heart's Reflection

Hakuno questions if she's going down the right path, though admits it's easy to feel like that when everyone's against her for it. Hakuno is certain she's hit rock bottom, but Sumire tells her that means she can only go up. Hakuno disagrees, but says nothing and gives Sumire a sad smile.

As the two lay on the couch together, Hakuno asks Sumire why she helped her on her first day at school, considering what she had to lose. Sumire says she felt foolish for letting her friends hurt her. Hakuno says she'd known them for longer, but can't imagine being friends with them, and asks if they were always that way. Sumire says it's complicated; they didn't have anyone but each other when they were younger, and that distrust became a venom. Sumire admits she'd also done some bad things because of their influence, though Hakuno points out she still veered off course.

The two continue to stare at the ceiling, as Hakuno is unable to feel angry or sad at what had happened. Sumire asks Hakuno if she'll be okay at her new home. Hakuno isn't sure, but says she hopes she will. Hakuno tells Sumire that if it's a long time before they can see each other again, she hopes Sumire will be okay without her. Sumire insists they will, and that they can still keep in touch via texting and calling if she wants. Hakuno says she does, and Sumire gets up to put her arm on Hakuno's shoulder.

Without a second thought, Hakuno begins crying into Sumire's arms. Hakuno admits she doesn't know if she can do this without Sumire. Sumire assures her it'll be better, with an aunt that supports her and a new school that might not have bullies like before. She says she'll do what she can to help, even if she can't be there for her, but Hakuno admits she doesn't know if she can be the person she wants to be. Sumire tells her she knows there's no going back, especially when, to Sumire, Hakuno is already that person.

Route: True to Myself

Hakuno says things don't have to be over, as Sumire has given her the hope that she can be who she wants to be. Because of that, she doesn't want to believe this is really the end. Sumire asks if she'll still come to visit, which Hakuno is hoping for.

Sumire tells Hakuno she'll have the happy life she deserves, and Hakuno says that if Sumire believes it, then she will too. Hakuno's crying begins to calm as she falls back to her side of the couch. As tough as it is now, she tries to believe there's a happy ending waiting for her as she falls asleep.
