Story
A flashback appears: A younger Arietta, wearing a cloth around her right eye, asks if using the NOISZ could allow her to heal her body. A younger Beyond, missing her right arm, pours over various schematics and instructions. She explains that her father and his team were able to defend themselves from Noise Beasts by wielding the NOISZ. By attuning the energy to the wavelength of the Void, Beyond believes it can undo the damage done to their bodies and to the boundary between worlds.
Arietta apologizes, but Beyond assures her it was her own fault and that neither of them knew what would happen.
The two discuss their plan to use the NOISZ to collect energy from Noise Beasts that enter the human world. However, both of them are too weak to use the NOISZ effectively, especially with the risk that the polarity of the NOISZ could erase them entirely. Arietta suggests finding someone else willing to use the NOISZ.
The scene fades to black, then an unknown amount of time passes before the next part of the flashback:
After finding someone willing to use the NOISZ, he finds out about Beyond and Arietta's plan to harvest his energy and turns on them. He charges at them with murderous intent; however, before he can do much damage, he collapses.
The scene fades to black once more, and some time later, the flashback continues:
Beyond and Arietta learn that the NOISZ consumes the user's soul as energy. The proposed solution by the researchers behind the NOISZ was to divert some energy into the remnants of the user's soul, reanimating the deceased user as a soulless warrior, called a NOISZ Beast. Beyond is opposed to using this method, but Arietta argues no one else has to die if this works out.
When that NOISZ Beast was crushed in battle, he hadn't collected enough energy. The two found another NOISZ user, but after what happened before, they refused to tell them about extraction. They stayed with each new user afterwards, watched them die, reanimated them as NOISZ Beasts, and collected the energy once they fell.
Arietta stays behind and researches a way to break the cycle: the mass-production NOISZ. The consumption rate is 37.2 times higher than the original. At this rate, Arietta feels a user would not live long enough to be useful, as giving it to someone would amount to murder.
Suddenly, a mysterious force interrupts her internal dialogue. It offers to help Arietta. While Arietta doesn't trust it, she's desperate to do whatever it takes to break the cycle and see her sister smile again.
Back in the present day, Beyond tries to talk the main character out of fighting Arietta. The main character still insists on fighting her, so Beyond stands in their way.
